2022 We're already halfway through the year, how are you planning to send holiday wishes to friends and family? Will greeting cards be at the top of your holiday gift list?
As it sounds, sending greeting cards for the holidays is a very old-fashioned behavior. This little thing that was once seen as synonymous with holiday gifts has been replaced by so many things - you can simply send an e-card to a faraway friend, or purchase a gift online and mail it directly to them.
Greeting cards don't seem to be in vogue anymore. This is not the case.
According to the Greeting Card Association, sales of single greeting cards worldwide have dropped to 100 million from 110 million the year before. However, total card sales rose, from £169 million the year before to £184 million last year. That means that those who are still buying cards are spending more money per card.
Greeting cards show no signs of dying out, but rather have increased in "value", and there is no lack of impetus from companies behind them. One of the most representative examples of this is the British greeting card manufacturer Moonpig.
Nick Jenkins started Moonpig in 1999 after completing his MBA. By 2007, Moonpig had sold around 6 million cards, accounting for 90% of the UK greeting card market, and in 2011 it was acquired by PhotoBox, Europe's largest online photo printer. In 2011, Moonpig was acquired by PhotoBox, Europe's largest online photo printing site, with personalized albums being its most popular service.
Last year, Moonpig's sales jumped 34%, and it has nearly 500 million photos on its site from 10 million active users. In the UK alone, more than five million people ordered cards from Moonpig, a monumental new record for Moonpig. As a result, PhotoBox Group's revenues rose to £288.5 million.
James Sturrock, Managing Director of Moonpig, believes that even in a digital age, there are still many people who enjoy the feel of a physical greeting card.
Moonpig's website features more than 1,000 card templates, so you can upload your own photo or customize your greeting to create a unique holiday greeting. It also offers holiday gift options including flowers, wine, and food gift boxes. Last year, Moonpig sold 12 million greeting cards worldwide, and on Valentine's Day, it sold one million roses.
In addition to offering a wide variety of gift options and personalized service, Moonpig's greeting card templates themselves inspire purchases.
Moonpig's design-rich cards are always on-trend, thanks to its customization service, which, along with PhotoBox's customization service, requires users to upload an image in addition to its strong appeal. Based on this, Moonpig has developed a large user database, which allows it to analyze what kind of images users like to upload to gauge their preferences. moonpig has a 12-person team of design professionals who analyze what kind of cards are likely to be popular in the next year based on the data from one year's users.
"Over the last few years we've seen that red and silver colors are very popular," says James Sturrock.
"As for this year, hygge is a big trend, so the Scandinavian-inspired designs on our website are selling well", says James Sturrock.
